해리슨 버트 위슬에게 사사받았다. 킹스컬리지 재학시절부터 영국 음악계에서 두각을 나타내어
세계적인 클래식 레이블 DECCA에서 음반 발매하였으며, 유럽 순회 클래식 연주회는 물론
뮤지컬, 연극, 영화음악 작곡가로서 활동하고 있다.
이루마는 2001년 1집「Love Scene」으로 데뷔, 순수한 서정의 미를 수줍은 듯 고백하며
우리 곁을 찾아왔다. 같은 해 12월 2집「First Love」를 발표하여 서서히 그의 이름이 알려지기
시작함과 동시에 드라마 ‘겨울연가’에 그의 ‘When the love falls’가 삽입되면서 굉장한 반향을
일으켰다. 이후 영화 ‘오아시스’ 이미지 앨범「OASIS & YIRUMA」, 애니메이션 「강아지똥 O.S.T」
를 발표, 피아니스트뿐만 아니라 작곡가로서의 면모를 보여주었다.
그의 3집「From the yellow room」발표 이후 이루마는 한국 최고의 작곡가 겸 피아니스트로
자리를 확고히 하며 기록적인 앨범 판매량으로 주위를 놀라게 했다. 이후 스페셜 앨범 「Nocturnal
Lights... They Scatter」 First Love」리패키지 와「Destiny of Love」「YIRUMA Live at HOAM
Art Hall」DVD 에 이르기까지 한껏 성숙해진 음악을 선보이는 동시에 핫트랙 등
주요 레코드샵 인기 챠트에서 1위를 기록하며 높은 인기를 과시했다.

2005년 11월, 이루마는 서정적인 시와 같은 음악들 「POEMUSIC」을 발표했고,
2006년 KBS윤석호 감독의 드라마 <봄의 왈츠>의 메인테마를 연주하여 또 한번의
돌풍을 예감하게 한다. 또한 특유의 아름다운 멜로디 라인 속에 피아노의 타악기적
효과를 십분 활용한 프리패어드 (prepared)피아노 기법 등 실험적 시도와 최상의
미니멀리즘이 돋보이는 정규 5집 「h.i.s monologue」등 총11장의 앨범들이
높은 판매고를 올리며 절찬리에 판매되고 있으며 2006년 7월, 해군에 입대해
큰 화제를 불러일으키기도 했다.
2008년 8월 늠름하게 제대한 이루마는 그 해10월 정규 6집 「P.N.O.N.I」발표하며
그의 서정적 피아노 선율을 고대하는 팬들 곁으로 돌아왔다.
이루마의 높은 인기는 공연을 통해서도 확인할 수 있다.
뉴에이지 아티스트로서는 최초로 12개 도시에서 첫 전국투어를 성공적으로
마침(2003.6~9)과 동시에 호암아트홀과 영산아트홀에서의 공연을 전석 매진시키는
저력을 과시하며 전국에 뉴에이지 열풍을 가져온 이루마는 2004년<2004>,
2005년 <2005이루마의>로 성황리에 전국투어를 마쳤으며, 서울대 병원,
전남대 병원, 인천 길병원 등에서의 <병원콘서트>와 중고등학교에서의 <학교콘서트>를
통해 따뜻한 위로와 응원의 한마디가 필요한 이들에게 음악을 선물하기도 하였다.
2006년 1월에는<루마, 정미소에 가다>라는 제목으로 가진 소극장 장기 공연을 전회
매진시켰으며, 입대 전 전국 투어 콘서트 역시 뜨거운 관심과 반응을 일으켰다.

2006년 7월, 해군 입대로 인한 2년간의 공백을 아쉬워하는 팬들에게 한층 성숙해지고
깊어진 음악세계를 보여준 「2008 이루마 전국투어 콘서트 Ribbonized-어린시절로의 여행」을
통해 20개 도시의 팬들을 찾아가며 활발한 활동을 시작하였다.뿐만 아니라 이루마는
2009년 1월 1일부터 KBS1FM'세상의 모든음악' 의 진행을 맡으며 다양한 음악을 소개하며

2002년 1월 프랑스 깐느에서 개최된 세계 최대규모의 음반 박람회 ‘MIDEM’에서 한국인 최초로
초청 공연을 가진 후 유럽, 아시아에서 라이센스 수출 발매하였으며, 이루마는 현재 세계를 무대로
활동하는 가장 촉망 받는 아티스트로서 한국 문화계의 위상을 드높이고 있다.

Pianist, Composer, Producer YIRUMA
(YIRUMA means accomplishment in Korean)

An accomplished 30-year-old(2008) artist, YIRUMA was born in Korea and raised in England.
YIRUMA began playing the piano at age 5 and moved to London, England at age 11 to study
at The Purcell School of Music in London. He graduated as a composition major from
Kings College of London University.

His first album was released by DECCA, a prestigious classical music label
while he was still studying at Kings College. During this time, he also performed a music tour
throughout Europe and composed for musicals, film and theatre.
YIRUMA performed at the 2002 MIDEM in Cannes, France. YIRUMA was the first Korean artist
ever to be invited to perform at this world-renowned music festival. His albums were licensed
for release across Europe and Asia. All 5 albums have been licensed in Japan, Taiwan,
Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. In addition, the 'Doggy Poo O.S.T' is slated for release
in United States in 2004.

2 years after his 2nd album, YIRUMA recently released his 3rd album 'From the yellow room'.
Pre-order sales alone topped 30,000 copies and the album was top-ranked on
almost every music chart, including Yes24, Phono, Hot Tracks and others.
His 12 city national tour was a sellout and his November concert
at the Seoul National Arts Center also sold out.
On November 2005, he released his 4th album, 'POEMUSIC', which is full of
lyrical melody. Following year, he composed a main theme song for popular KBS drama
'Spring's waltz.' He released 5th album, 'h.i.s monologue.' In this album,
he experienced prepared piano technique, which is about having percussion feeling
in beautiful melody. While he was making his success continuously in music industry,
he made up his mind to join Navy in order to do his duty as a Korean.

After two years, he finished his service in Navy and came back to his fans
with his 6th album, P.N.O.N.I as well as 2008 Yiruma Come Back Tour ‘Ribbonized’
around 20 cities across the nation. On January 1st 2009, he became a DJ f
or KBS1FM 'YIRUMA'S MUSIC FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD(세상의 모든음악).'
Currently, Stomp music is representative of Yiruma.

What do you love the most in a guy?
Personality. People can fake their outer looks but they cannot fake what’s inside them. Looks will not last forever but good personality will stay with a guy until his last breath.

What do you hate the most in a guy?
I hate dishonest people. A guy should never cheat or lie to any female in any part of the world. Women and girls should be well respected by being truthful and honest to them.

What would be your ideal dinner date?
It will be two people cooking together. Having a good dinner is not about enjoying the meal at the moment but also the process of 3 stages that include before, during and after dinner.

What is your idea of good entertainment?
Wearing a bikini pampering my skin on the beach and enjoying the wind that blows all my worries and problems away.

What would really make you laugh out loud?
The answer will be, there is nothing that cannot make me laugh out loud because we are born to laugh and most even leave this world with a smile. Being positive and optimistic is the greatest weapon god has ever given to anyone.

What would really make you cry?
Nothing will ever make me cry because a person or things that make me cry don’t deserve me. I deserve laughter and not tears.

What do you consider the most important event in your life so far?
The most important event will be now because I do not live in the past or future. Let bygone be bygone and future or even tomorrow is still ahead of me. So, I live my life to the fullest for every moment. Since now I am in Broadwalk Modeling therefore this is the most major event in my life.

What is your greatest achievement so far?
Having 397 votes from different people in Broadwalk Modeling is a great achievement and I believe the greatest has yet to come.

What is your opinion of the modeling industry in Malaysia today?
The modeling industry is growing as compared to 50 years back but it is still very new and fragile. Most people are still pessimistic about modeling line. Many still put beauty ahead of talent, quality and personality. I wish to go further in Broadwalk Modeling to change the perception as Obama said “Change We Belief In and Yes We Can”.

Why do you deserve to win this competition?
I’d say anyone deserves to win this competition because no one is born to lose. Perhaps being myself and the way I am is the best reason for me to win this competition. I wish for more votes and support from all of you.

Ho Yuhang was born and raised in Petaling Jaya. He graduated with a degree in engineering at Iowa State University before opting for a career in filmmaking. Nation’s first A(H1N1)-related death

PUTRAJAYA: The nation had its first Influenza A (H1N1)-related death Thursday.

An Indonesian patient died of underlying conditions and health authorites said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the 30-year-old first-year student from the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance, Kuala Lumpur, had died from cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm).

“The Influenza A (H1N1) was not a direct cause of his death,” he said at a press conference.

The patient went back to Indonesia for a holiday and returned to Malaysia on July 5 and was reported to be suffering from a mild fever and cough, he said.

On July 21, the patient fainted while waiting for his medication after consulting a doctor at a private medical centre in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Liow said.

He was given emergency treatment but he passed away at 11.50am. “A post mortem was carried out at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on the same day and the results showed that the patient was obese, had pneumonia, an enlarged heart and liver and pus-like material at the bottom of the trachea,” he said.

Liow said 20 specimens had been taken to carry out virology, bacterialogy, histopatology, bio-chemical and toxicology tests.

The virology and bacteriology tests on lung tissues and the trachea showed the presence of Influenza A (H1N1). “We are still waiting for other test results and the cause of death will be confirmed once all the tests are completed,” he said.

Liow said 25 staff members of the medical centre were ordered to self-quarantine themselves for seven days while seven of his room mates and study group were identified and one of them had sought treatment for influenza symptoms.

The ministry also carried out health checks yesterday at the college, he said.

Eighteen new cases were reported yesterday and 17 of them were the result of local transmissions and one imported where a Malaysian had returned from London.

From the local transmissions, 13 were from four clusters in Malacca while the rest were isolated cases.

In Kuala Terengganu, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus in Dungun will cease classes for a week when several of its students were tested positive for the virus.

In Malacca, three colleges were ordered to be closed for a week. They are Maktab Perguruan Perempuan Melayu in Durian Daun, Kolej Professional Mara in Jalan Hang Tuah and Kolej Yayasan Melaka in Bukit Sebukor.

Several students of the women training college were placed under quarantine at the dorms by health authorities since Monday.

A check at Kolej Professional Mara in Jalan Hang Tuah and Kolej Yayasan Bukit Sebukor revealed that classes had been called off.

In Sabah a school in the Lahad Datu district was shut down yesterday after two students were tested positive for the virus. Another 108 students were quarantined at the school hostel.

A FORM Three student threw away at least 10 warning letters from her school so that she could continue having sex with her boyfriend in a secluded goat pen in Jenderam Hulu.

She dumped the letters over the past three months to prevent her parents from knowing that she had played truant to go on her jaunts with the 19-year-old youth, Kosmo! reported.

Apparently, the 15-year-old girl began sleeping with the youth in March and became addicted to sex.

However, her mother became suspicious after noticing “physical changes” in her daughter.

She was shocked when the girl admitted that she had not been going to school for three months and had instead been with the youth.

The girl’s family then went in search of the youth who had disappeared. Police are now looking for him.

‘Ray of hope’ that turned out to be a nightmare

KUALA KUBU BARU: We were hit by the stench of faeces and urine the minute we walked into the men’s block at Taman Sinar Harapan located in a secluded area of the town here.

Mr A, a volunteer from a non-governmental organisation who goes to the home every Sunday to clean and feed the residents, opened the locked door at the back of the block and we were stunned by what greeted us.

About 30 stark naked men were inside the room, either lying down or sitting on the wet marble floor. In one part of the room, we saw a pool of blood, still fresh and red, on the floor.

Half of the men were locked behind bars like animals in a zoo while the others were able to move about in the front portion of the room. Those in the “jail cells” were segregated so that they would not harm their non-violent roommates.

“Those who are accidentally placed inside the cells with the more aggressive residents would be beaten or abused,” the volunteer revealed.

Most of them looked no older than 50 but they were just skin and bones and some looked extremely frail. One resident was lying on his stomach on a wooden bench and had passed motion; we almost gagged at its stench.

Fans were installed inside the room for better ventilation but that was the only luxury the men had. There were no beds, no toilets and not even blankets to keep them warm on cold rainy nights.

Those who were not in the “jail cells” were given beds but without any mattresses or pillows. They were, however, chained to the bed frame with metal chains and a steel lock.

We were told by a volunteer that they were restricted to prevent them from hurting themselves. The volunteer also shared that the men were not given any clothing as they had used their shirts to strangle themselves or the other men in the past.

After a briefing by Mr A, we got down to work. We were put in charge of spreading mats and towels on the floor.

The volunteers were all given different tasks. A group of about six or seven men were in charge of bathing the locked-up residents, the women were in charge of preparing the food and feeding the residents while the rest (there were two children in the volunteer group) were in charge of cleaning up the place and washing their clothes.

The residents were hosed down with water and soap by volunteers dressed in construction boots and a water proof apron.

After that, the male volunteers carried the naked men to the front part of the building for us to towel dry them.

After sensing our discomfort, a female volunteer nearby said: “It’s okay, they’re just like babies, you know, they don’t know anything.”

We proceeded to wipe them dry one by one before we were told to feed them with the yong tau foo bought by one of the volunteers.

The food was mashed to bits and mixed with soup to minimise the need to chew and to make feeding an easier task. so that the residents only needed to swallow them.

As we fed them, some ate obediently while others were greedy and stuffed their hands inside the bowls to take out larger portions of the food.

Some volunteers reprimanded the greedy ones who crawled towards the table to help themselves to more food. We noticed that some of the mentally disabled residents liked to hit themselves repeatedly. When we tried to stop them, they would fight back or just hit their body against the floor.

Mid-way through feeding, some volunteers suddenly rushed over to a young resident whose head was bleeding profusely. We were told that the boy had slipped and fell.

The volunteers immediately dressed him up, put him on a wheelchair and sent him to a hospital nearby.

After mopping the floor, we took a break and noticed that the residents were taken back into their cells to be locked up again.

It was nearly 4pm when everything was done. The residents were all bathed, fed and the place was clean enough.

We asked the volunteers what would happen to the residents on weekdays when the group was not there to offer their help.

The naked truth: Some of the inmates who were caged up in the home.

“The caretakers don’t do much. There are only two of them while there are 50 residents. If it’s time to feed them, they would just walk one round with a bowl and feed whoever wants to eat. Those who don’t are left alone,” answered a volunteer.

She divulged that another charitable organisation had brought food for the residents but it was thrown away. “When the group asked why they did such a thing, the caretakers said that the residents would create a bigger mess if there was more food because they would defecate more often,” she said.

After the voluntary group had left, we stayed back to check out the other blocks.

The women’s wing looked cleaner and did not smell as bad but a handful of the women were seen walking about in the nude.

The two caretakers stationed at the block were seen watching TV and chatting.

We noticed that the women’s clothes were laid out to dry on a dirty floor caked with fungus. We walked over to the children’s block which seemed to be the best kept part of the home. It was decorated and there were proper beds. But the children were curiously quiet.

A volunteer claimed that the children were fed with cough syrup so that they would be sleepy and docile.

"Treelife is a brand-new free event, launched here in Sydney before going to London and New York," says Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore MP. "This event will showcase innovative and creative sustainable architecture, and illustrate that green can co-exist with urban city life."

The world's first major public exhibition of 'green design' treehouses, TreeLife will bring the biggest names in international architecture, design and art into the one public place for the first time.

The Sydney launch of the event will showcase cutting edge green and sustainable design set in beautiful Hyde Park, one of Australia's most iconic and highly trafficked public spaces located in the heart of the city.

Life in the trees
Treehouses have become creative eco-statements in the design world. They allow people to literally be "in" nature and peace above the stressful street level of life. The Cool Hunter will invite top local and international architects, artists and designers to design for the event a modern treehouse, created from sustainable and recycled materials.

Global program of events:
To celebrate the incredible temporary environment created by TreeLife, the exhibition will host a program of events that will vary from city to city.

Art-life: Green-themed, organic art installations placed around treehouses including topiary.

Silent Cinema: Public, open-air "silent" movie screenings using wireless, sound-proof headphones.

Free bikes at each satellite venue for people to move from site to site in an eco-friendly manner

Louis Vuitton commemorates the 40th anniversary of man’s conquest of the Moon, elevating the theme of travel as a personal journey to a celebration of a voyage of unsurpassed significance for all mankind. The latest Core Values advertising campaign features Buzz Aldrin, who in the course of the historic Apollo 11 mission with Neil Armstrong on 20th and 21st July 1969, became the second man to set foot upon the Moon; Jim Lovell, the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970, who - as the world watched with bated breath - heroically guided his crew back to the safety of Earth; and Sally Ride, who in 1983 became the first American woman to venture into space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Challenger.

Once again shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, the campaign was shot on the high plateaux of the Californian desert, from where, on a clear night, the Moon takes on an almost supernatural intensity. The three astronauts are portrayed quietly surveying the sky from the battered pickup truck in which they have undertaken this journey together, each no doubt reliving an extraordinary memory. Beside them on the truck is Louis Vuitton’s Icare travel bag in Monogram canvas, an allusion to the mythological hero who also dreamed of flight. The tag line, in an echo of Neil Armstrong’s famous words in 1969, states: “Some journeys change mankind forever”.

Louis Vuitton is launching a dedicated website - louisvuittonjourneys.com– on which Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell and Sally Ride discuss how the experience of space changed their lives, offering a fascinating insight into Annie Leibovitz’s print visual. The site attains a degree of interactivity that is unprecedented for Louis Vuitton, enabling internet users to view the interviews as if they were actually present by, for example, playing them in any order they want, zooming in on an individual astronaut, or viewing the reactions of one astronaut to what another is saying. The interviews, which were filmed with three separate movie cameras to create a strange, gravity-defying ambiance, as if the astronauts were indeed in space, can also be downloaded to a computer, MP3 or mobile phone.
